A cracked windshield isn’t automatically a replacement job, but it isn’t always a quick fix either. The size, location, and depth of the damage decide which one you need.
The Quarter-Size Rule
Chips smaller than a quarter, away from the windshield’s outer edge, are usually good candidates for repair. A technician injects resin into the chip, cures it, and polishes it flush. Done well, it stops the crack from spreading and restores most of the glass’s clarity, though a faint mark can remain visible at certain angles.
Why Edge Damage Is Different
Any crack that reaches within a couple inches of the windshield’s edge changes the equation. The edge is where the glass is bonded to the frame and where it draws most of its structural strength. Damage there compromises that strength even if the crack itself looks small, and it almost always calls for full replacement rather than repair.
The Part People Miss: ADAS Recalibration
If your car was built in the last several years, there’s a good chance it has a forward-facing camera mounted behind the windshield for lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control. Replacing the glass moves that camera’s position by even a fraction of a degree, which means the system needs to be recalibrated afterward. Skipping that step means those safety features could be reading the road wrong without giving you any indication.
What This Means for Your Repair Decision
A repair takes under an hour and costs a fraction of a replacement. A replacement with ADAS recalibration takes longer and costs more, but it’s the only safe option once damage crosses into edge territory or spreads past chip size. If you’re not sure which category your damage falls into, that’s worth an in-person look before the crack decides for you by spreading.
